The child needs a local home
A school accepting a pupil for lessons does not take over their everyday living arrangements. For a child arriving without parents, the host family cannot be left as an afterthought. Where the child lives, who looks after them and whom the school contacts need to be settled before the start.
This article concerns families whose parents will not live locally. The three schools discussed here should not be approached as British-style boarding schools with accommodation included.
More than an available bedroom
I consider the match between the child and host family, communication, travel to school and how parents remain involved. Age, language ability, independence and habits all affect the support required. Local arrangements also need a named person who can respond and attend when something unexpected happens.
LEP uses its local relationships to coordinate suitable arrangements alongside school selection. In our nine-day case the parents had already found the host family; our work was to connect that arrangement with the school’s requirements and accompany the meeting.
Schools respond differently
In our applications involving parents abroad, St George’s has been the most constructive and responsive, followed by OTR, with ISL the most cautious. ISL expects strong parental participation and examines host-family arrangements closely. Its assessments in cases I have encountered included two sessions of about two hours.
St George’s combines strict procedures with willingness to discuss individual circumstances. Families working with LEP can arrange a three-day free trial through us. Admission still requires the school’s assessment.
Residence is a separate part of the plan
An offer is not a residence permission. An EU-internal family and a family moving from a third country may face different procedures. We check the applicable route alongside the school and local arrangements, with SBMG services available for broader cross-border planning. A minor’s situation should not be treated as an ordinary university student application.
The nine-day case did not include a visa application from China. For families preparing from China, I advise starting overall preparations at least four months ahead, with timing assessed for the actual circumstances.
