Free public schooling and studying without parents have different starting points

A family living in Luxembourg with the relevant local circumstances can assess public education separately. For a child coming alone while parents remain abroad, LEP’s current arrangement combines a private international school, a matched host family and local support. Budgeting should start with that service, rather than an assumption of free tuition.

The practical questions are which curriculum the child can follow, where they will live and who connects the arrangements. The parents do not have to relocate first for the private-school route we currently offer.

A suitable host family is an essential starting point

For this parent-abroad arrangement, suitable host-family accommodation and care must be established before the visa and enrolment arrangements can proceed. An offer from a school addresses only part of the plan. The child also needs daily care, a workable journey and a local contact.

LEP knows local schools and host families, matches against established standards and works with a host-family association on ongoing supervision. We consider the child’s school, languages, diet, routine and independence together.

If a family match is not working, we can coordinate a change and arrange temporary accommodation during the transition. If the school also needs reconsidering, our local school contacts allow the discussion to continue. This continuity is the central value of having someone based here.

What goes into a match?

FactorWhat LEP considers
Daily journeyActual school distance, journey time, transport and sustainable pick-up arrangements.
Child and family fitLanguage, meals, routines, study space, communication, personality and independence.
Local reputationKnowledge from local contact and continuing relationships, beyond room photographs.
SupervisionThe service agreement specifies supervision and coordination responsibilities.
ChangesHost-family adjustments, replacement, transitional accommodation and school discussions where necessary.

Simply introducing a family and leaving all later issues to the child would make it difficult for parents abroad to understand and address problems. LEP’s agreed supervision and coordination provide a continuing basis for involvement.

Why close coordination with schools matters

The international day-school arrangements we work with do not themselves provide host-family placement. Schools deliver education; accommodation, travel and daily care outside school need practical responsibility.

LEP supplies that local connection. The child’s school and home arrangements can work together, parents have someone to coordinate changes and schools have an ongoing counterpart. Our relationship with schools is built on complementary work for the same student.

Who should discuss a plan with us?

This service currently assesses children over 11. English-language education is the most established pathway for the families we serve. French- and German-language options depend on the child’s actual language and subject background; they should not be selected simply because the country offers them.

For an English-speaking pupil, we examine curriculum, grade and university intentions. For weaker language preparation, we first assess an appropriate entry point and preparation time. When parents cannot accompany the child, travel, holidays and local communication belong in the plan from the start.

An annual budget beyond tuition

Our 2026/27 references for private English-language upper-secondary education put annual fixed school charges at about €17,000–€24,200. A host-family room-and-meals reference of around €25,000 annually produces a combined starting range of €42,000–€49,200. Younger grades, curricula and living arrangements vary.

Add first-entry charges, deposits, LEP’s local services, insurance, flights, holidays and personal spending. The family arrangement must specify covered dates, meals and transport. LEP explains both the scope of work and its cost, so the family can see what each part of the budget solves.

Start with the child, not a list of applications

I am James Liu, based in Luxembourg with LEP. Our work runs from understanding the child through school discussions, family matching and the agreed local follow-up. Share age, curriculum, languages, intended start date, budget and the two daily-life issues that concern you most.

For an alternative living arrangement, read Luxembourg host families versus Swiss boarding schools. LEP can compare both against the child’s temperament and learning needs.

Discuss a plan with LEP

LEP is based in Luxembourg and provides school applications, host-family matching and continuing local coordination, including changes and temporary accommodation when needed. Services and fees follow the agreed scope.

Tell us the student’s age, current curriculum and results, languages, intended start date, budget and the two questions that matter most to your family.
