Matching begins with the child
Age, independence, diet, allergies, health needs, languages, routine and preferred level of companionship affect the match. Explain religious needs, sports training or special food requirements early.
| Area | What LEP helps clarify |
|---|---|
| Living space | Room, study area, household members and shared rules |
| Daily life | Meals, dietary needs, laundry, routine and weekends |
| School journey | Route, travel time and any required transport |
| Communication | Local contacts, update frequency and emergency contact |
| Holidays | Dates at the household, travel to parents and associated charges |
A pleasant home with a tiring commute may be wrong for this student. School and household choices need to work together.
The household, school and LEP have connected roles
The family provides agreed everyday living arrangements; the school handles teaching and school life. LEP connects the parents’ questions with the people on the ground, listening both to the child and to school and household feedback.
Daily support, emergency contacts and written parental authorisations are clarified during arrival and admission. The child should know whom to contact and the parent should know who handles each issue.
Updates that tell parents something useful
In our continuing follow-up arrangement, we prepare feedback every two weeks during the first month and a combined update every two months afterwards. We look at learning, everyday habits and adjustment.
Homework, activity participation, household relationships, meals and sleep provide more information than a general “everything is fine”. We bring together different observations and agree practical next actions.
If the match is not working
We first understand the cause: food, travel, routines, a language misunderstanding or a difficult relationship need different responses. We discuss workable changes; where a new home is needed, LEP coordinates alternatives and handover.
If the main difficulty concerns learning, we speak with the school about the course and support. Changing a household and changing a school are separate decisions.
What does the host-family budget cover?
My previous planning reference is approximately EUR 25,000 per year for agreed accommodation, meals and daily living support. Actual dates, transport and holidays are specified for the household. School fees and paid LEP local services are separate parts of the budget.
Read the school-cost comparison, then tell LEP the child’s age, languages, independence, health and dietary needs, intended start and annual budget. Our job is to connect a real school with a real home and sustained local communication.
