Parents increasingly ask how education connects to future work, not just what the next school year offers. I do not see Switzerland as a compromise chosen solely to spend less. Our visits revealed schools worth considering for their teaching options, living environment and international exchange.
The UK retains Graduate and sponsored work routes for eligible graduates; Switzerland has its own employment-admission conditions. A school move should improve curriculum, living arrangements, affordability and future choices rather than be treated as a work-permit outcome.
Where is the student in the current curriculum?
| Current stage | Possible approach | What LEP checks with the receiving school |
|---|---|---|
| Before GCSE/IGCSE examination courses | Select an entry point by age and preparation | Languages, mathematics, year placement and available places |
| Part-way through GCSE/IGCSE | Preserve progress or move after the complete stage | Exam board, syllabus, completed assessments and exam entry |
| GCSE/IGCSE completed | Continue to A Level or begin IB DP | Subjects, grades, language and university targets |
| Part-way through A Level | Seek continuity in course and subjects | Content taught, practical/course assessments and final exams |
| Part-way through IB DP | Match HL/SL subjects and completed work | Internal assessment, EE, TOK and CAS |
Even the same A Level label may cover different exam boards and teaching sequences. A suitable match can preserve progress; an adjustment may be necessary where key content cannot align. The objective is a successful qualification, not simply copying a UK year label.
Which visited schools fit which route?
For A Level, Chantemerle is a starting point. For IB, compare LIA Wikon, Lémania, ENSR and Saint-Charles. Wikon is currently discussed as an IB option; its A Level provision has not been confirmed. ENSR and Saint-Charles also merit discussion for a Swiss Maturité route, with language and course duration assessed early.
UK private schools do not all follow A Level. Send LEP the student’s actual timetable and recent results so that course names become concrete questions for the next school.
Separate tuition, full boarding and first-year costs
The following uses 2026/27 information. Wikon’s combined range comes from our school-visit discussion and needs an itemised offer. Other figures come from school schedules; Lémania assumes a standard twin room. Seven-day boarding is the relevant starting comparison when parents remain abroad.
| School / programme | Annual tuition CHF | Seven-day boarding and meals CHF | Combined annual CHF |
|---|---|---|---|
| LIA Wikon / IB | — | — | 55,000–60,000 |
| Chantemerle / IGCSE, A Level | 29,500 | 33,000 | 62,500 |
| Lémania / IB | 36,000 | 39,220 | 75,220 |
| ENSR / IB | 29,700 | 51,300 | 81,000 |
| Saint-Charles / IB DP | — | — | 92,500 |
Chantemerle lists a further 1,600 for the first year, with insurance, examinations and options to add. ENSR’s IB first year is 82,201 including application and the listed IB platform charge, before the 7,000 deposit and other personal items; graduation examinations add 1,390–2,650 at the relevant stage. Saint-Charles IB DP reaches about 98,300 including application, registration and under-18 insurance; deposit and personal-expense account remain separate.
Seven-day boarding describes weekends, not every long holiday. LEP checks opening dates, holiday care, flights, transfers, insurance and additional lessons against the current UK school bill. Repeating an extra year can cost more than an annual fee difference.
Educational quality and choices beyond Switzerland
In QS 2027, ETH Zurich is joint eighth and EPFL joint twenty-second. Switzerland offers strong research-university options. These rankings do not rate an individual secondary school; they help identify possible university goals to work back from.
An IB, A Level or Maturité completed in Switzerland can also support applications to the UK, the US and elsewhere in Europe, subject to the target institution’s requirements. The child’s university options do not have to stop at the Swiss border.
Two years of school and three years of university: a worked example
A Swiss private school followed by a Swiss public university is a particularly useful combination to cost. Private Swiss hospitality degrees have a different price structure. The following uses Lémania IB with standard twin boarding and Haileybury senior boarding as school anchors, then EPFL’s budget and Manchester’s international Computer Science BSc fee. These are cost scenarios; academic suitability and admission are assessed separately.
| Two school years + three bachelor years | Swiss example CHF | UK example GBP |
|---|---|---|
| School tuition + main boarding per year | 75,220 | 59,460, including VAT, 2026/27 |
| Two school years | 150,440 | 118,920 |
| Annual bachelor tuition and listed fixed fees | 4,480, higher EPFL fee category | 39,700, Manchester 2027 entry |
| Annual bachelor living budget | 29,000, EPFL planning reference | 15,000, input for this model |
| Three bachelor years | 100,440 | 164,100 |
| Total of these items | 250,880 CHF | 283,020 GBP |
For a common illustrative currency, using fixed planning rates of CHF 1 = CNY 9 and GBP 1 = CNY 9.5 produces approximately CNY 2.258 million and 2.689 million: a difference of about CNY 431,000. These are illustrative exchange rates, not current or future transaction rates. Published prices are held constant; initial school registration, holiday care, transport and individual extras must be added. EPFL students in the lower fee category pay less.
The example shows why the whole period matters. Another UK degree, Swiss school or housing choice changes the result. An extra school year or a private hospitality bachelor requires a new calculation. At master level, compare the actual duration: many UK programmes last one year, while the Swiss programme may require longer.
Starting at lower-secondary age adds those actual years to the same ledger. Comparisons with the US, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong or Singapore should likewise hold the starting point and qualification constant, including care and university fee status. LEP can make the two or three routes the family genuinely considers concrete.
Swiss and UK after-tax purchasing power
OECD Taxing Wages 2026 compares a single worker without children earning the average wage in 2025. Purchasing-power-adjusted US dollars account for overall national price differences.
| Annual model | Switzerland | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|
| Gross earnings, PPP USD | 106,532 | 82,329 |
| Income tax + employee social contributions | 18.1% | 23.1% |
| Approximate after-tax income using these rates | 87,250 | 63,310 |
Swiss after-tax purchasing power is about 38% higher in this model. It is not a graduate starting salary or savings after rent. Swiss compulsory personal health insurance, other non-tax payments and actual housing choices require separate attention. For a real offer, use local currency and subtract outstanding insurance/pension payments, housing, food and transport from actual take-home income.
LEP first assesses a suitable subject, internships, realistic jobs and employment eligibility. See Swiss graduate employment conditions before translating national income figures into a personal plan.
The international environment happens every day
During this trip, I was struck by the small Chinese presence in several schools and by daily interaction across languages and backgrounds. What matters is whom the child works with in lessons, residences, activities and projects, not simply a total of nationalities in a brochure.
LEP can ask about the actual target year, programme, language use, group work and boarding arrangements. UK schools also vary; compare with the student’s current school. Wikon’s refreshed space and value, ENSR’s orderly boarding and Lémania’s city setting offer different benefits.
Families who also want to examine European establishment and residence planning can explore SBMG. LEP focuses on education and applications; wider arrangements are assessed against the family’s circumstances.
Discuss a plan with LEP
LEP provides school-fit assessment, school liaison, application assistance and family campus-visit bookings. Schools pay for this application support; students and parents pay no LEP service fee for it.
Tell us the student’s age, current curriculum and results, languages, intended start date, budget and the two questions that matter most to your family.
