Is Saint-Charles the right Swiss boarding school? IB, fees and university pathways

Which curriculum would your child follow?

Saint-Charles is in Porrentruy, in the French-speaking canton of Jura. Families considering secondary education should distinguish its English-medium IB pathway from its Swiss curriculum. [1][2][3]

The IB requires breadth as well as depth: students study across six subject groups alongside the extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, activity and service. It can suit a student who wants to keep a broad academic profile and can manage sustained coursework and research. [2]

The separate Saint-Charles High School Diploma is not the full IB Diploma. Before choosing it, check how the intended universities assess that particular qualification. The words “High School Diploma” alone do not establish equivalent university access. [4]

Can a student apply without French, or with developing English?

The English IB pathway does not require French at the level needed to study academic subjects in French. English must, however, support the intended year of study. Language support is available and assessed during admission. Near the Diploma years, subject knowledge and academic reading and writing matter as much as conversational fluency. [2][5]

The Swiss route has different entry points. The school says its lower-secondary programme can accept pupils without French and provide intensive support. For the Maturité, it specifies strong B2 French, placement testing and, in some cases, conditional admission with additional French lessons. An earlier entry with no French is therefore a different proposition from joining near graduation. [3]

We start with the pupil’s current language skills, subjects and time remaining before examinations. A move should have a workable academic timeline; national year-group names cannot simply be matched without examining the curriculum.

What stayed with me after visiting Saint-Charles?

During my visit, I learned that the school’s owner and his wife were both former pupils, and that their daughter was running the school. That family connection with their old school gave me a much more personal understanding of the institution.

I also remember its connection with the town: the town’s cinema was on the school premises. School life felt connected to the surrounding community, rather than entirely separate from it.

When assessing a school, I look at its curriculum, facilities and the people behind it together. A prospectus or course table rarely conveys all three.

Boarding houses, swimming and riding: what did I see?

Among the Swiss international boarding schools I have visited, Saint-Charles has particularly impressive facilities, apart from the very top tier. This is my assessment from visiting, rather than a formal ranking.

At the time of my visit, the school introduced two newly built boarding houses with gym facilities. It also had an equestrian school and its own swimming pool, with a movable floor allowing the water depth to be adjusted. These were memorable examples of the spaces available beyond the classroom.

The school’s published accommodation information describes two separate boarding houses, a dedicated team, study areas and common rooms. LEP can check the room arrangement for an individual pupil and whether activities such as riding carry additional charges. [6]

What are the 2026/27 tuition and seven-day boarding fees?

These are the published 2026/27 annual fees in Swiss francs (CHF), including tuition and basic board and lodging. Do not add the same boarding charge a second time. [7]

Additional items include a one-time CHF 300 application fee and CHF 3,000 enrolment fee. The schedule lists health insurance at CHF 2,500 for pupils aged 18 or under, plus a CHF 5,000 refundable deposit and CHF 7,000 personal-account advance. A deposit and prepaid spending are different from final expenditure. EAL/FLE language lessons are listed at a further CHF 12,000 when required. [7]

For a new IB DP pupil in that insurance age band, tuition and boarding, application, enrolment and insurance total CHF 98,300. Including the deposit and personal-account advance brings the initial funding requirement to CHF 110,300. Add CHF 12,000 if the listed language support is needed. This is a calculation from the published items, not an all-inclusive final bill: personal spending is reconciled against actual charges, and flights and other expenses need a separate budget. [7]

LEP compares the curriculum, language support, first-year charges and boarding arrangements together, so the family can assess the commitment beyond a headline starting price.

Where can students apply to university?

The English IB route can support applications to universities in the UK, US, Netherlands, Switzerland and other countries, subject to recognition, grades, subject combinations and language requirements. Studying the IB in Switzerland does not give the diploma the admission status of a Swiss Maturité. [8][9]

EPFL, for example, specifies higher-level subject combinations and academic conditions, with capacity limits. A strong overall score cannot compensate for an ineligible subject selection. [9]

The Swiss Maturité offers another route: EPFL currently recognises the Swiss gymnasial Maturité for undergraduate admission. Families focused on Swiss universities and willing to invest in French and a broad curriculum should explore it early. This does not mean unconditional admission to every university and every degree programme. [10]

Start with possible degree subjects and university destinations, then work backwards to the school curriculum and languages.

Which families should put Saint-Charles on their shortlist?

It is worth considering for a pupil seeking an English-medium IB education whose family values the boarding environment and can sustain the fees over several years. Families with time to build French and broader subject foundations can also assess the Swiss route.

If the expectation is that moving to Switzerland will make academic work easy, or the budget only just covers year one, the longer-term plan needs further discussion. Facilities support learning; the student still has to undertake the reading, writing and examinations.
