Why consider TASIS in a Swiss school search?
I have visited TASIS. That visit provides a personal point of reference; choosing a school still requires a careful look at what a child will study, how they will graduate and which university options they want to preserve.
The American School in Switzerland is in Montagnola, near Lugano in Ticino. Its American high school diploma, AP courses and IB programme make it relevant to families comparing US, UK and European university pathways.[1]
Separate the appeal of living in Switzerland from the qualification a student will earn. Both matter, but they answer different questions.
Which grades can board?
TASIS lists boarding from Grade 6 through Postgraduate. Grade 6 commonly corresponds to around age 11–12; that is a general age guide, not a guaranteed admission threshold. Placement requires review of the child’s age, previous curriculum and academic record.[1]
Grade 6 and Grade 9 are common entry points. Other grades may be available depending on suitability and space. A late high-school transfer needs particular care with credits and course continuity. “Postgraduate” here means a year after high school, not a university master’s degree.[4]
IB, AP and the American diploma: what changes for your child?

AP is not a separate high school diploma, and taking individual IB courses is not the same as earning the full IB Diploma. TASIS schedules AP offerings in response to interest, so check the actual year’s programme.[2][3]
LEP recommends starting with a student’s strengths and intended subject. A family comparing engineering, business and humanities may reach a different decision from one simply comparing programme names.
What if English is still developing?
Do not assume every grade is exclusively English-medium. TASIS publishes English–Italian bilingual instruction in Grades 1–9, with English the primary language in Grades 10–12. A non-Italian-speaking applicant to a younger grade should clarify how they will access the curriculum.[1]
English as an Additional Language support is available. Non-native English speakers applying to Grades 6–12 are asked to complete a writing test and an online placement test independently.[8]

Boarding when parents remain abroad
Full boarding includes weekend activities. Rooms are mainly doubles, with some accommodating up to four students, and designated study time runs from Sunday to Thursday evenings.[5]
Ordinary weekends and extended holidays are different. TASIS closes dormitories during extended holidays and major Academic Travel sessions. A family must plan those periods rather than assume year-round accommodation.[5]

2026/27 fees: a realistic first-year starting point
Amounts below are in Swiss francs, CHF, using the school’s 2026/27 middle and high school schedule.[6][7]

For a new boarder whose family is not domiciled in Switzerland at enrolment, who is not in Grade 12 and needs no additional specialist services: 106,500 + 1,250 + 5,000 = CHF 112,750. Including the separate deposit means arranging CHF 115,750 before other extras.
The annual charge includes applicable EAL, college counselling, regular activities and Academic Travel, room and meals, laundry and basic health/accident insurance within the policy’s scope. Individual activities, holiday arrangements, travel and personal spending need further allowance.[7]
LRC services are listed separately at CHF 1,500 for Middle School and CHF 2,000 for High School; Grade 12 has a CHF 350 graduation fee. The deposit is not unconditionally refundable: non-entry, withdrawal during the year or dismissal can mean losing it. Review the individual invoice and terms before committing.[7]
This is a substantial family commitment. The relevant comparison is the full cost of an appropriate course and boarding arrangement, sustained over the expected years of study.
Must graduates go to the US? What about Swiss universities?
No. TASIS describes major graduate destinations in the US, UK and elsewhere in Europe. Admission still depends on the student’s actual qualification, subjects and results.[4]
Studying in Switzerland does not itself grant admission to a Swiss university. IB applicants face institution-specific subject, level and score conditions, with language requirements potentially additional. Speaking the local language alone is not enough.[9]
For an American-diploma/AP applicant, check that qualification’s rules rather than borrowing IB conditions. LEP can help families identify these issues before finalising school subjects.
