Compare the actual learning stage
| Question | International School Altdorf | Saint-Charles |
|---|---|---|
| Upper-secondary route | IB Diploma Programme; IB career-related route | English Pre-DP and IB DP |
| Preparation | IGCSE and individual entry discussion | English Pre-DP; separate Swiss pathways |
| Main comparison | Course, support and sustainable budget | Course, accommodation and campus resources |
| Without accompanying parents | Boarding with a full calendar plan | Seven-day boarding with holiday planning |
IB DP is a two-year programme with six subjects and the TOK, EE and CAS core. IB CP combines academic subjects with career-related learning and is a different qualification route. LEP clarifies the programme and intended university use before application.
A child in lower secondary or the first year of Chinese high school may need academic-English and subject preparation. An older student needs a closer review of course continuity; being in Chinese Grade 11 does not automatically permit entry to the second DP year.
Annual spending and first-entry cash
Saint-Charles’s 2026/27 seven-day boarding schedule lists CHF 90,500 for English Pre-DP and CHF 92,500 for DP per school year. Seven-day describes the weekly boarding arrangement, not the length of the billing period.
For a new DP student under 18, application CHF 300, registration CHF 3,000 and scheduled insurance CHF 2,500 bring the listed expenditure to CHF 98,300. Add the CHF 5,000 deposit and CHF 7,000 personal-account advance for CHF 110,300 in initial cash. Advances differ from final spending. Where required, the listed additional language support adds CHF 12,000.
My earlier Altdorf screening reference is approximately CHF 50,000–55,000 per year. LEP obtains the relevant current course-and-boarding schedule and separates insurance, support and holidays before a final comparison. A planning reference and a dated official schedule serve different stages of the decision.
Why Saint-Charles’s facilities impressed me
At the Porrentruy school I saw the newer residences, gym space and strong campus facilities. Riding resources, a pool with adjustable depth and the town cinema within the school make its daily environment distinctive.
These resources matter if the child will use them. I would connect the extra budget with actual sport, living and activity needs rather than choose from attractive photographs alone.
How I approach a budget-focused choice
For Altdorf I first ask whether the course, English and academic support fit the student and whether the family can sustain the complete stage. A student with stable subject habits may benefit from focusing funds on English-medium school and university preparation.
Where campus activities and accommodation are major priorities and the full Saint-Charles budget is comfortable, both schools merit a discussion. The shortlist comes from the child’s situation.
Turning comparison into an application with LEP
Send recent grades, curriculum, languages, intended entry, university interests and annual budget. We discuss entry stage, available subjects and support directly with the school, then align boarding dates, extras and payment timing.
Explore Altdorf and Saint-Charles. LEP can connect a visit or student experience with the application decision.
